Swarnalatha Died

The South Indian filmplayback singer Swarnalatha has passed away. Swarna Latha died at a private hospital in Chennai today due to lung related disease. She is from Palakkad, Kerala. She has been singing since 1989 with several music directors. She has rendered songs in Tamil; Kannada; Telugu; Hindi; Malayalam; Urdu; Badaga.

The 37-year-old most talented singer Swarnalatha has worked with some of the most well known film composers in the industry, remarkably Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman. Songs she has sung on comprise Povoma Oorgolam from the film Chinna Thambi and Rakkamma from the film Thalapathi. She also sang the song Porale Ponnuthayi from Bharathiraja’s 1994 Tamil film Karuththamma composed by A. R. Rahman.

She went on to triumph the National Film Award for Best Female PlaybackSinger for the song in 1995. She has provided her voice to hit songs from films including Thalapathi (1991); Thevar Magan (1992); Karuththamma (1994); Bombay (1995); Indian (1996); and Minsaara Kanavu (1997). She was one of the ‘melodious’ as well as ‘experimenting’ singer of her times. She sung in the film Sillunu Oru Kaadhal (2006).

She has been singing since 1983 and is considered one of the greatest female playback singers in the South Indian Film Industry. She was also awarded the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 1995.
