ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Purvanchal University (renamed as Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University in the honour of late Shri Veer Bahadur Singh, former Chief Minister of the state) Jaunpur was established on 2nd October 1987 as an affiliating university under U.P. state university act 1973. Continuous qualitative and quantitative growth, excellence in academic and administrative activities and transparent and efficient academic administration have been some of the distinct characteristics on the basis of which lthe university emerged as one of the leading universities of the country. Started with the 68 affiliated colleges, the university now has widened it’s spectrum of activities with 331 affiliated graduate and post-graduate colleges and students enrollment of nearly five lack and eighty thousand in 5 Districts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The university is located at 10 km from the historic city of Jaunpur on Jaunpur-Shahganj road which divides it’s 171.5 acres campus into two. Jaunpur is well connected by Train, Road and Air with rest of the country. The infrastructure development, achievement of academic excellence, quality assurance in the higher education and socio-economic development of this highly backward & rural region of Eastern Uttar Pradesh are some of the priority areas for which the university is putting its best efforts.

The beginning of two-year full-time residential MBA course in 1990 was one of the first steps towards making change in the character of the university from affiliating to affiliating-cum-residential university. The dearth of technical and professional educational facilities and growing demand for need based courses in the region have been the guiding factors that have led the university on the path of continuous academic growth with the beginning of 16 more residential courses in the various streams including Engineering & Technology (B.Tech.), Modern and Applied Sciences (MBT), Management ( MFC, MHRD), Pharmacy(B.Pharmacy) and Applied Social Sciences(MAP, MBE, MMC ) in mere 15 years since it’s inception. The last three years have witnessed a remarkable growth in the university with the introduction of new courses like B. Pharm, B. Tech. in Instrumentation, Mechanical & IT, M. Sc. (Applied Biochemistry, Applied Microbiology & Environmental Sciences), MBA (Agri-Business), MBA(E-Commerce). In addition, the university has introduced a number of need-based PG Diploma programmes in different subject areas like Financial Management , International Business, Export Management, Stress Management, Sports Psychology, etc during the last 3 years.

The university also plans to start courses in Medical Sciences and Library & Information Sciences in near future, which would certainly prove to be a mile-stone in the multidirectional academic expansion of the university. The inclusion of university in the 12(B) of the UGC and its accreditation by NAAC in the year 2001 and 2004 respectively, have been pivotal in moving the university in list of prominent centers of higher learning on national higher education map. These developments proved to be instrumental in the academic expansion of the university, especially in promoting the quality teaching and research.

James Weddell KBC 4 Question

James Weddell (Ostend , August 24, 1787 – September 9, 1834) was an English sailor, navigator and seal hunter who in the early Spring of 1823 sailed to latitude of 74°15′ S (a record 7.69 degrees or 532 statute miles south of the Antarctic Circle) and into a region of the Southern Ocean that would later become known as the

James Weddell joined the Navy in 1796 and by 1815 had risen to the rank of Master earning him high marks from his superiors in the process. In 1819 he joined the Merchant Service and was introduced to a shipwright named James Strachan who, along with several other partners, owned a 160 ton brig. Weddell persuaded Strachan to give him command of the ship for a sealing expedition to the newly discovered South Shetland Islands. Even though Weddell was new to sealing, Strachen went along with the plans due to Weddells Antarctic training while in the Navy. Little is known about this voyage other than Weddell actually visited the group as well as the South Orkney Islands recently found by Powell and Palmer. Weddell returned in 1821 but it was an unprofitable venture due to insufficient cargo.

The following year a second voyage was planned, again primarily for sealing, but this time it was agreed that Weddell would attempt to search beyond those efforts of earlier sealers. On September 17, 1822 the JANE, manned by 22 men along with the 65 ton BEAUFOY, with 13 men under the command of Matthew Brisbane, departed from England.

Due to the inadequate size of the ships, along with poor provisions, the task ahead was a formidable one indeed. Between 1820 and 1822 no less than six sealing vessels had shipwrecked in the South Shetlands. The JANE, in particular, received significant damage to her planking and stem due to the severe weather. There was plenty of rum for the sailors (3 glasses a day), but the food was inadequately supplied from the onset. Rations had to be halved while wintering in the Falkland Islands and scurvy was a constant threat although only one crewman died.

Weddell was an explorer at heart. The accuracy of his observations and the charts prepared of the South Orkneys proved he was a man who admired accuracy and despised the wild and unsubstantiated claims made by some of the earlier explorers. Even though there were tremendous problems confronted by the expedition, Weddell, much like Cook before him, was a great leader of men. The men were cheerful and willing to work despite all the hardships.

After stopping at Madeira and Bona Vista, Weddell crossed the equator on November 7 and sailed on to the Falkland Islands for repairs arriving on December 19. On December 30, both ships sailed south and reached the eastern end of the South Orkneys on January 13, 1823. Finding few seals Weddell decided to search further south. Slowly the two vessels made their way south experiencing difficulties with fog and icebergs along the way. By January 27, Weddell turned north once again as, after all, he was to hunt for seals and thus far his cargo hold was essentially empty. Hoping to find land between the South Orkneys and South Shetlands, Weddell sailed to within 100 miles of Sandwich Land where he came close enough to Cook's route to know he would not find land where he had hoped to. It was on February 4 that Weddell decided to head south once again. Brisbane bravely agreed and in the dark and foggy weather the two ships began their historic journey.

Both crews suffered from the intense cold and fog. Weddell did what he could for them but the small ships were constantly battered by the gales which kept them in a perpetual state of dampness. The weather eventually cleared and at noon on February 20 Weddell determined his position to be some 214 miles further south than Cook had achieved. The weather was now extraordinarily clear and mild. Four icebergs were sighted but there was no land in sight. Due to the lateness of the season, along with Weddell's possible doubts of there being any land at the pole, Weddell took advantage of the favorable winds and headed north. The crew was naturally disappointed in his decision but Weddell gave a speech to the crew praising their efforts and congratulating them on penetrating further south than anyone before them. Weddell named the waters King George IV's Sea. After sheltering at South Georgia and wintering at the Falklands, the ships sailed for the South Shetlands in October 1823. They were struck by a violent hurricane and upon reaching the islands they discovered a thick ice pack surrounding them so on the 18th of November, Weddell turned to the west to search for seals around Cape Horn. Both ships eventually returned to England in July 1824.

It is sad to note that no other ship has successfully sailed the same route as Weddell to substantiate his claim but there seems to be no reason to disbelieve him. It was a record southing that would not be broken until Wilhelm Filchner succeeded nearly 100 years later in 1911.

Goddess Laxmi Excellent Photos

Lakshmi puja is performed during Diwali, the festival of lights. According to tradition people would put small oil lamps outside their homes on Diwali and hope Lakshmi will come to bless them.

The third day of the festival of Diwali is the most important day of Lakshmi-puja and is entirely devoted to the propitiation of Goddess Lakshmi. On this very day sun enters his second course and passes Libra which is represented by the balance or scale. Hence, this design of Libra is believed to have suggested the balancing of account books and their closing. Despite the fact that this day falls on an amavasya day it is regarded as the most auspicious.Initially the house must be cleaned, and a Rangoli is drawn at the doorstep in order to welcome Goddess Lakshmi.

Australia v Sri Lanka at Perth, Srilanka Win by 7 Wickets

A brutal Sri Lankan performance delivered Australia their first Twenty20 defeat at home as Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara thrust the tourists to a commanding seven-wicket victory. The hosts were first overwhelmed by a stunning bowling display, dropping to 5 for 43 in the 11th over and finishing at 8 for 133, before becoming the victims of an explosive batting effort.

The opener Dilshan guided the small chase with 41 off 34 balls while the captain Kumar Sangakkara registered a delightful 44 off 43 and the game was over 21 balls early. With the English squad staying a short walk away as they prepare for the Ashes - Kevin Pietersen was in the stands - Australia suffered their fourth Twenty20 loss in a row and their first in 11 games at home. The defeat felt as severe as the result inflicted by England in Southampton at the start of Australia's failed 2005 Ashes tour.

Mahela Jayawardene and Dilshan raced to 35 in the fourth over and Dilshan kept up the pace when Jayawardene went for 24 off 16. Sangakkara joined Dilshan and they were rarely troubled as they drove, flicked and forced boundaries. Dilshan, who was stumped off Steven Smith, finished with six fours and Sangakkara gained six of them as the pair enjoyed tormenting the inexperienced attack. Thisara Perera then arrived to finish the game off by thrashing Smith for a six, a four and another six over long-on to finish the match.

Jayawardene crashed two boundaries from Clint McKay's opening over and then blasted two more from Peter Siddle, who got his revenge when the batsman edged behind. Siddle was back in Australian colours for the first time since January and the breakthrough was a relief for the hosts. Dirk Nannes was then fortunate to have Dinesh Chandimal (2) lbw to a ball pitching outside leg, but that was when Australia's luck ran out.

Brad Haddin and Smith were in charge of Australia's first-innings rescue and put on a much-needed 66 in 7.2 overs. Haddin, playing his first international since the World Twenty20 in May, showed his elbow was healed with 35 off 30 balls, including a crisp straight six off Dilhara Fernando.

However, the offspinner Suraj Randiv dismissed Haddin and Smith (34) in the same over to stop them from racing away. Sri Lanka's attack was brilliant as it dominated on a surface offering some helpful bounce. Randiv was impressive with 3 for 25 off four overs while Malinga (1 for 26) and Fernando (1 for 29) were fast and uncomfortable. Perera also chipped in with a very handy 2 for 22 from four.

Clarke delivered an immediate surprise after winning the toss by walking out to open with David Warner, but the restructure didn't provide the required boost as he strolled to 16 off 19. He has been criticised for his run-a-ball scoring in a game that demands much more but the move back-fired, especially in comparison to the output of his opponents.

Clarke managed the first four in the third over and also lifted Muttiah Muralitharan for six, but in between the boundaries a frustrated David Warner (2 off 8) miscued Fernando. Fernando then removed Clarke with a spectacular back-pedalling, one-handed catch at mid-on to turn the volume down on a crowd desperate for the locals to fire.

The exits of David Hussey (7) and Shane Watson (4) added to the Australian headaches, leaving them at 4 for 31 in the eighth over. When Cameron White edged behind to Malinga five of their main men were gone just after the halfway point of the innings. From that point the game was Sri Lanka's.

Bava Movie Review

Siddhartha had no notable hits in the recent past and he hardly does two films a year. The only blockbuster he had in his career is Bommarillu, while his films Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana, Koncham Ishtam Koncham Kashtam run above average and has flops like Aata and Oye. Now, he has strived hard to break the jinx by taking up a film with village backdrop. However, the debutant director Rambabu has punctured his dreams.

Story:
Sitaramudu (Rajendra Prasad) is fond of acting. He used travel different places to satisfy his urge to act in dramas. Once, he visits a village to stage a drama and a girl (Sindhu Tolani), sister of a landlord, falls in love with him. Accepting her wish, Sitaramudu meets her brother and tells that he will marry her. But, her brother says no. Immediately after that he ties the nuptial knot. But that girl wants to stay in the village as she feels that her brother would invite them back into the family.

Sitaramudu and his wife blessed with a boy called Veerababu. He is just an average boy and falls in love with Varalakshmi (Pranitha), daughter of his own maternal uncle. However, both Veerababu and Varalakshmi doesn’t know that they both are close relatives. Once, Varalakshmi’s father settle her marriage with Ramana (Samrat). Varalakshmi pleads Veerababu to do something and the couple he ties the nuptial knot.

Then, Sitramudu reveals the flashback saying that they both are close relatives and their marriage is valid. But he tells Veerababu to marry her only in presence of all her family members. So, Veerababu tries to convince Varalakshmi’s father. However, Ramana’s father reveals the identity of Veerababu and gets him thrashed black and blue. When Sitaramudu tries to convince Varalakshmi’s father, they thrash him as well. Unable to bear humiliation Sitaramudu dies. Will he get back his wife? What kind of steps he took in this regard? Did Ramana allow him to take Varalakshmi? Did Varalakshmi’s father realized his folly? Answers to all these questions form part of the climax.

Technical:
Veera Pothana's dialogues are good. He has used made colloquial language with nativity and maintained good depth while scripting words. The writer mixed sentiment and entertainment perfectly to suit different occasions for this village love story. Cinematography by Aravind Krishna is okay. He has perfectly captured the beauty of the village with his camera. Camera work especially during songs and cycle race in the climax is good. KV Krishna Reddy should have sharpened his scissors further to trim several scenes in the film. However, there are many boring scenes in the second half and also before the interval. If such scenes were shortened further, the film would have been more impressive. For music director like Chakri, scoring tunes for a film with village backdrop is nothing. But for this time, he has given a few fresh tune. Director Rambabu has tried to given a novel movement to already known and well-played on the screen subject. None of the characters has a good foundation. Characters like Tanikella Bharani and Samrat just come and go. As far as screenplay, The director still needs some maturity in narration. Let us hope he would do something better in his next film.

Performance:
Siddharth’s performance is impressive in the film. The character with village backdrop suited him very well. His combination scenes with Rajendra Prasad are worth watching. Pranitha has done her best to give a decent performance. She looked good at parts. Rajendra Prasad is a show-stealer in the movie. Being a seasoned artiste, he has given a matured performance all through the film. His performance in the second half remains highlight. Other artistes including Ahuti Prasad, Viswanath Kasi and others have done justice to their roles. A parody to Varudu film was used as comedy. Brahmanandam and Ali has made a vain bid to entertain the audiences with sickening comedy.

Cast: Siddharth, Pranitha, Rajendra Prasad, Samrat, Tanikella Bharani, Brahmanandam, Ali, Raghu Babu, Ahuti Prasad, Bharat, Narsing Yadav, Viswanath Kasi, Sindhu Tolani, Rajitha, Surekha Vani and others.

REMARKS:
When a director wanted to make a film, he should keep a point in mind. He must have complete grip on the subject and script. Especially, when the story and screenplay are also being handled by the same person, who is directing the film, he should keep in mind that he had to do justice to every scene. Bad Luck, Siddhartha kept high hopes on the film and all his hopes and dreams have been shattered.
